Third Anglo-Ashanti War
1873–1874 CE
Conflict between the Asante Empire and British interests on the Gold Coast intensified after changes in regional control and disputes over coastal states. In 1873 Britain sent an expedition commanded by Garnet Wolseley, supported by West Indian and African troops.
The campaign advanced through forest terrain, defeated Asante forces and occupied Kumasi in February 1874. The resulting treaty altered the balance of power without ending Asante independence or later conflict.
