Benjamin Tallmadge

Benjamin Tallmadge was a Continental Army cavalry officer who became George Washington’s principal organiser of military intelligence during the American Revolutionary War. He supervised the Culper Spy Ring, developed codes and routes for information from British-occupied New York, and also led raids on Long Island. After the war he became a businessman and long-serving member of the United States House of Representatives.

In Lucia St. Clair Robson’s Shadow Patriots, Tallmadge provides the organisational centre of the Culper network, connecting civilian agents such as Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend to Washington’s command. Historical fiction tends to emphasise his secrecy and control of codes, while his broader military career shows that intelligence work was only one part of his wartime service.
