Benjamin Tallmadge

Benjamin Tallmadge was a Continental Army cavalry officer who became George Washington’s principal organiser of military intelligence during the American Revolutionary War. He supervised the Culper Spy Ring, developed codes and routes for information from British-occupied New York, and also led raids on Long Island. After the war he became a businessman and long-serving member of the United States House of Representatives.

Tallmadge organised the Culper Spy Ring, using couriers, codes, invisible ink and carefully separated contacts to gather intelligence from British-occupied New York. He also served as a cavalry officer and took part in operations such as the capture of Fort St George. After the war he entered business and represented Connecticut in the United States House of Representatives for many years.
