Abraham Woodhull

Abraham Woodhull was a Long Island farmer and magistrate who became a leading agent in the Culper Spy Ring during the American Revolutionary War. Working under the code name Samuel Culper Sr, he carried intelligence from British-occupied New York through a network organised by Benjamin Tallmadge, exposing himself and his family to severe danger.

Lucia St. Clair Robson’s Shadow Patriots uses Woodhull and the Culper network to explore the practical risks of espionage: coded letters, concealed identities, divided communities and the difficulty of judging loyalty under occupation. Fiction often gives him a more continuously adventurous role than the surviving evidence permits, but his real importance lay in patient observation and the reliable movement of information to George Washington’s headquarters.
