Darrell Duthie is a Canadian author of military historical fiction who lives in the Netherlands, close to many of the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. He grew up in different parts of Canada and spent much of his youth in Calgary, Alberta, where he studied political science and economics. After moving to the Netherlands to complete an MBA, he worked in European equity markets before becoming a full-time novelist. His fiction reflects a particular interest in Canadian military history, intelligence work and the decisions made by soldiers and officers under the prolonged pressures of modern warfare.
Duthie is best known for the five-volume Malcolm MacPhail series, which follows an outspoken Canadian soldier and intelligence officer through the First World War. In chronological order, the novels are A War for King and Empire, Vicissitudes of War, A Summer for War, Malcolm MacPhail’s Great War and My Hundred Days of War, covering the Western Front from 1915 through Canada’s Hundred Days in 1918. He later began the Archie Atwell Second World War series with The Red Patch Private, following a Canadian infantryman during the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943. His novels combine battlefield action and military procedure with questions of discipline, loyalty, ambition and personal honour.
