Historical person
Hasdrubal Barca
246 BCE–208 BCE
Hasdrubal Barca was the younger brother of Hannibal and a Carthaginian commander in Iberia during the Second Punic War. He fought Roman armies attempting to sever Carthage’s resources and, after major setbacks, crossed the Alps with reinforcements for Hannibal. Roman forces intercepted him at the Metaurus River in 207 BC, where he was killed and his army destroyed. His severed head was reportedly thrown into Hannibal’s camp as news of the defeat.
Hasdrubal appears in Ben Kane’s Hannibal trilogy and in Ross Leckie’s novels about the Punic Wars. Fiction often builds suspense around the possibility that the brothers might unite in Italy and overwhelm Rome. His defeat at the Metaurus therefore becomes a turning point, combining strategic consequence with the personal tragedy of brothers separated by distance and failed communication.
