Philippa Roet

Philippa Roet was a woman of the royal household, the sister of Katherine Swynford and the wife of Geoffrey Chaucer. She served Philippa of Hainault and later members of the Lancastrian circle, linking her to both court administration and literary culture. The surviving record reveals payments and household connections but little about her personality or marriage. Through her family she stood close to John of Gaunt and the future Beaufort dynasty.

Philippa appears in Anya Seton’s Katherine and in historical fiction about Chaucer and the Lancastrian court. Novelists often use her as the practical sister who connects Katherine’s private life with Chaucer’s literary one. Because documentation is slight, detailed portrayals of her marriage or influence are necessarily imaginative.
