William Brereton

William Brereton was a Cheshire landowner, royal servant and gentleman of Henry VIII’s privy chamber. In 1536 he was accused of adultery with Anne Boleyn and convicted alongside several other men, despite the weakness and political character of the evidence.

His execution helped remove a powerful regional figure as well as support the case against the queen. William Brereton was born in Cheshire and died in Tower Hill.
