December 1170. Mercenary Sir Benedict Palmer accepts payment to accompany four knights sent to seize Archbishop Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The attempted arrest becomes murder, and the group’s leader Reginald FitzUrse abducts Theodosia, a young nun who witnessed the killing and unknowingly carries information capable of damaging Henry II’s throne.
Palmer turns against his companions and escapes with Theodosia, beginning a pursuit across England in which neither can rely on rank, church or royal law for protection. Their alliance develops into love as they uncover a conspiracy larger than the archbishop’s death. By adding a fictional fifth participant to the four historical knights, the novel recasts the Becket murder as both a political thriller and the beginning of Palmer’s struggle to choose conscience over paid obedience.
