Death Comes but Twice
First published 2020
London, 1893. Doctor James Carlyle is asked to examine a murder victim and discovers through the new science of fingerprinting that the dead man is Artus Skuja, a criminal officially hanged the previous year. The identification appears impossible, and the execution record only deepens the mystery.
Carlyle seeks help from preacher Matthew West, who witnessed the hanging and knows the people surrounding the case. Further deaths suggest that Skuja’s apparent return is part of a larger concealment, forcing the investigators to determine who survived the execution, who falsified the official story and why the deception has now become lethal.
