Wyoming Range Wars and Homesteader Conflict
c. 1870–1895 CE
During the late nineteenth century, large cattle companies used extensive areas of public land in Wyoming while homesteaders and smaller ranchers filed claims, fenced property and competed for water. Severe winters, falling cattle prices and uncertain land titles intensified disputes over who possessed a legitimate right to the range.
Economic power was reinforced through hired gunmen, local political influence and accusations of cattle theft. The tensions culminated most visibly in the Johnson County War of 1892, but intimidation and smaller confrontations occurred across the territory before and after that crisis.
Jack Schaefer’s Shane uses a fictional valley conflict shaped by the same struggle between established cattle interests and settlers attempting to secure independent farms.
