Siege of Vienna

The Siege of Vienna in 1683 brought Ottoman forces to the walls of the Habsburg capital. A relief army, including Polish forces under King John III Sobieski, helped break the siege. The defeat became one of the most famous Ottoman-Habsburg turning points.

It mattered because it checked Ottoman expansion in central Europe and entered European memory as a dramatic rescue. The event also belongs to a wider frontier war rather than a simple clash of civilisations. It gives fiction a setting of siege, diplomacy, cavalry, refugees, court fear and competing religious narratives.
