With Fire and Sword — Three-Volume Edition

This three-volume edition divides Henryk Sienkiewicz’s first Trilogy novel, With Fire and Sword, into consecutive parts. Set during the Khmelnytsky Uprising of 1648, it follows the Polish officer Jan Skrzetuski, Helena Kurcewicz and their companions as Cossack revolt, Crimean Tatar intervention and the military failures of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth transform a private love story into an epic of war.

Volume I introduces Skrzetuski’s rivalry with Yurko Bohun and the opening victories of Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Volume II expands the conflict across the Commonwealth while Skrzetuski searches for Helena, and Volume III culminates in the siege of Zbarazh and the royal relief effort. The narrative reflects Sienkiewicz’s nineteenth-century Polish patriotic purpose and largely adopts the perspective of the Commonwealth’s nobility, so its adventure plot sits beside a highly partisan representation of a conflict marked by rebellion, repression and communal violence.
