The Heart of the Samurai

Walt Mussell’s The Heart of the Samurai series follows artisan and merchant families living in Himeji and Osaka during the final decades of Japan’s Sengoku period. Beginning in 1577, the prequel introduces Sen, the inquisitive younger daughter of a celebrated swordsmith, whose curiosity draws her into a murder and a conspiracy surrounding one of her father’s samurai clients. Ten years later, Sen must protect her family’s craft by finding a husband willing to enter the swordsmith household, while her Christian faith places both her and the apprentice Nobuhiro in danger.

The story moves to Osaka in 1590, where Aki, a cloth merchant’s daughter, and Nishioji Tomi, a samurai serving with the city police, become entangled in allegations of tax evasion, silk smuggling and an anti-Christian conspiracy. Across the sequence, Mussell combines romance, mystery and domestic drama with the social hierarchies of a unifying Japan. Swordmaking, commerce, arranged marriage, filial duty and the increasingly precarious position of Japanese Christians shape the choices available to characters seeking honour without surrendering conscience or family.
