John Allyn

John Allyn was an American author and scholar best known for The 47 Ronin Story, his historical retelling of one of Japan’s most celebrated samurai narratives. He studied Japanese through the United States Army’s wartime language programmes and spent the early years of the American occupation working in Osaka and Tokyo. After returning to the United States, he earned advanced degrees in theatre arts and theatre history at UCLA, specialising in Japanese drama.

First published in 1970, The 47 Ronin Story recounts the actions of the masterless samurai of Akō, who sought revenge after their lord was ordered to take his own life. Allyn places the familiar story within the political and social tensions of early eighteenth-century Japan, exploring loyalty, honour, duty and the declining position of the warrior class. His background in Japanese language and theatre helped him turn the historical incident into an accessible and dramatic work of historical fiction.
