The Great Peacemaker is the traditional founder of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, working with Hiawatha and the clan mother Jigonsaseh to end cycles of warfare among the member nations. His teachings are embodied in the Great Law of Peace, which established principles of council, consensus and collective government.
Haudenosaunee oral traditions credit the Peacemaker with establishing the Great Law of Peace and bringing the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca into a confederacy. Hiawatha and the clan mother Jigonsaseh are central partners in many versions of the tradition. Because the story was transmitted orally for generations, chronology varies, but the political principles associated with the Peacemaker remain foundational to Haudenosaunee identity and governance.
W. Michael Gear’s trilogy fictionalises the Great Peacemaker as Dekanawida, whose message challenges a political culture trapped in cycles of vengeance. People of the Black Sun shows him trying to persuade hostile communities that survival requires cooperation while Atotarho prepares to dominate them by force. In Blood Lightning, the appeal for peace becomes a practical political programme: rival nations must create rules capable of restraining powerful war leaders rather than simply agree to stop fighting. Eclipse Dancer brings that project to its climax, with prophecy, warfare and negotiation converging on the creation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The books therefore portray the Peacemaker primarily as a lawgiver and coalition-builder whose achievement depends on transforming grief and fear into institutions strong enough to survive renewed conflict.
