Travels of Marco Polo
c. 1271–1295 CE
Marco Polo travelled east with his father Niccolò and uncle Maffeo, passing through the eastern Mediterranean, Persia and Central Asia before reaching the court of Kublai Khan. The route and details remain debated, but the journey became one of Europe’s best-known accounts of Asia.
The Polos spent many years within the Mongol world before returning to Venice by sea and land. Marco later dictated an account describing cities, peoples, commerce and government across Asia.
