Theodoric’s Conquest of Italy
489–493 CE
Theodoric led the Ostrogoths from the Balkans into Italy in 489 with the approval of the eastern emperor Zeno. His forces defeated Odoacer at the Isonzo and Verona and gradually secured much of the peninsula.
Odoacer withdrew to Ravenna, whose marshes and defences sustained a prolonged siege. The rivals eventually agreed to rule jointly, but Theodoric killed Odoacer shortly after entering the city.
