David Lloyd George

1863–1945

David Lloyd George was a Welsh Liberal politician who served as British prime minister from 1916 to 1922. He directed the final years of the First World War, represented Britain at the Paris Peace Conference and promoted major social reforms, while his coalition methods and post-war policies remained divisive.

David Lloyd George was born in Manchester and died in Llanystumdwy. Lloyd George served as chancellor of the exchequer before becoming prime minister in 1916, directing Britain through the final years of the First World War and playing a major role in the post-war peace settlement at Paris.

Pat Barker’s The Eye in the Door makes David Lloyd George the distant target of the alleged Alice Wheeldon poison plot, drawing the prime minister into a story about wartime surveillance, pacifism and state suspicion. Cynthia Harrod-Eagles’s Pack up Your Troubles moves into 1919, when the Paris Peace Conference and post-war settlement unfold under Lloyd George’s premiership. Saul David’s 100 Days to Victory places his government within the political decisions that accompany the final campaigns of 1918. 1916 examines the year in which Lloyd George moved from the Ministry of Munitions to the War Office and then the premiership, while 1917 sets his leadership against submarine warfare, coalition strain and the changing strategic demands of a global war.
