In 1302, a fragile peace reigns in Christendom. The rival kings of England and France have agreed to a truce, but fresh conflict could break out at any time. There is also peace in Scotland, where Edward Longshanks has vowed to return and burn the land from sea to sea. The uneasy stalemate is broken in Flanders. After two years of French occupation, the Flemish cities suddenly rise in arms. Philip the Fair, king of France, is forced to send an army to crush the revolt.
