Phase
1940–1945
After the defeat of Poland in 1939 and the fall of France in 1940, thousands of Polish airmen and support personnel reached Britain. Polish fighter pilots played a highly visible role in the Battle of Britain, while separate Polish squadrons were progressively formed within the RAF structure.
The Polish Air Force in Britain eventually included fighter, bomber and specialist units and participated in operations over occupied Europe, the Atlantic and Germany. Its personnel combined continued military service against Nazi Germany with the political problem of an occupied homeland whose post-war future became increasingly uncertain.
Adam Zamoyski’s The Forgotten Few is a nonfiction social and military history of these men and women, their contribution to Allied air operations and the difficult choices many faced after 1945.
