Operation Pedestal

10–15 August 1942

Operation Pedestal was a major British convoy operation mounted in August 1942 to resupply Malta at a moment when the island’s fuel and food stocks were critically low. The convoy and its powerful escort passed through sustained Axis air and submarine attacks in the western and central Mediterranean.

Many ships were sunk or damaged, but several merchant vessels reached Malta, including the badly damaged tanker Ohio. The supplies helped the island continue its resistance and made Pedestal one of the decisive episodes in the wider siege of Malta.
