Siege of Sevastopol
1941–1942 CE
Sevastopol's coastal defences and difficult terrain enabled Soviet forces to resist repeated German and Romanian attacks. The siege involved heavy artillery, air attack and severe losses.
The city fell in July 1942 after the final Axis offensive. Many defenders were killed or captured, while some specialists and wounded personnel had previously been evacuated.
Lyudmila Pavlichenko fought at Sevastopol before injury removed her from front-line service, an episode central to The Diamond Eye.
