Operation Bagration

23 June–19 August 1944

Operation Bagration began in June 1944 as a massive Soviet offensive against German Army Group Centre in Belarus. Red Army forces used deception, concentrated artillery, armour and deep operations to rupture German positions and destroy or encircle large formations across a front hundreds of kilometres wide.

The offensive drove German forces west toward Poland and the Baltic, inflicted one of the Wehrmacht’s greatest defeats and transformed the strategic position on the Eastern Front. Its success strengthened Soviet political leverage as Allied leaders considered the shape of post-war Europe.
