Sinking of Bismarck

The German battleship Bismarck entered the North Atlantic in May 1941 with the cruiser Prinz Eugen in an attempt to attack Allied shipping. At the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Bismarck sank HMS Hood and damaged HMS Prince of Wales, triggering an intensive British pursuit across the Atlantic.

British aircraft and warships eventually located and disabled Bismarck. A torpedo attack from Swordfish aircraft damaged her steering, allowing British battleships and cruisers to close in on 27 May. The battleship was overwhelmed by gunfire and torpedoes and sank with heavy loss of life.

The episode became one of the best-known naval actions of the war and was closely connected with the intelligence and reconnaissance effort needed to find a fast-moving enemy ship at sea. It provides a specific context for David Boyle’s The Athens Assignment and Operation Primrose.
