Interwar North East England, 1918–1939

After the First World War, traditional North East industries faced unstable demand and intensifying competition. Coal, shipbuilding and heavy engineering remained central to employment, but closures, wage reductions and prolonged unemployment placed severe pressure on working-class communities.

The General Strike of 1926 and the depression of the early 1930s exposed the region’s dependence on a limited industrial base. Public assistance, migration and informal family support became essential, while class distinctions and expectations surrounding respectability, marriage and legitimacy retained unusual force.

Catherine Cookson’s interwar family narratives place private ambition and scandal within this environment. Characters attempt to preserve businesses, households and social standing while economic insecurity and the memory of war reshape relations between generations.
