The Bride Ships

The Bride Ships series follows women who leave Victorian Britain aboard organised emigrant ships carrying prospective brides to Vancouver Island and British Columbia in the 1860s. Sea voyages, colonial shortages, gold-rush settlements and an epidemic create circumstances in which class assumptions and carefully made plans quickly collapse.

Each novel asks what freedom can mean when women’s choices are constrained by poverty, reputation and the urgent demand for wives in a male-dominated colony. Faith, dignity and service shape the romances, while the series examines the moral responsibilities created by migration, Indigenous displacement and unequal colonial power.
