Otho Belleme

The Otho Belleme sequence follows an English adventurer whose mistakes, divided loyalties and search for redemption carry him into the French Foreign Legion and the deserts of North Africa. Soldiers of Misfortune introduces Otho and the circumstances that estrange him from ordinary life; Valiant Dust continues his story amid colonial warfare, personal sacrifice and the hard discipline of Legion service.

These two novels use military adventure to explore culpability and moral recovery. Wren’s familiar barracks, marches and desert outposts provide the external action, while Otho’s past gives the sequence its psychological centre. Honour is not treated as a simple social reputation but as something the protagonist must reconstruct through difficult choices.
