The Hamilton trilogy follows Maisie, a socially isolated woman whose conversations with an imaginary horse help her endure humiliation, loneliness and the demands of ordinary life. Hamilton begins as a private refuge, but the relationship also gives Maisie enough confidence to challenge the people who dismiss or exploit her.

Across the three novels, marriage, bereavement and changing family responsibilities test the survival of that inner world. The sequence is less a conventional historical saga than a compassionate study of imagination, resilience and the uncertain boundary between eccentricity and emotional self-preservation.
