Artists, musicians, widows, orphans and former soldiers enter Belmont’s cultivated world while the city attempts to rebuild after occupation and civil war.

Across three romances, ambition is tested against honesty, service and Christian conscience. The series uses art forgery, charitable reform and Nashville’s developing classical-music culture to examine women’s restricted opportunities, the obligations of wealth and the difficult work of creating a life that is both beautiful and morally durable.
