Damiens’s Attempted Regicide, 1757

On 5 January 1757, Robert-François Damiens approached Louis XV at Versailles and wounded him with a small knife. The king survived, but officials treated the attack as a possible political conspiracy and subjected Damiens to prolonged interrogation.

Damiens was publicly executed in Paris in March 1757 using the punishment traditionally reserved for regicide. The case exposed anxieties about royal authority, religious controversy and the search for hidden organisers even though no wider plot was proved.
