Yue Fei

Yue Fei was a Southern Song general born in Tangyin in 1103, during the crisis created by the Jurchen conquest of northern China. After entering military service he rose through campaigns against both internal rebels and the Jin dynasty, developing a reputation for disciplined forces and aggressive operations aimed at recovering lost Song territory. By the late 1130s his armies had become one of the principal military instruments of the Southern Song state and had won a series of important victories in central China.

Yue Fei’s military strategy collided with the court’s decision to negotiate peace with the Jin. He was recalled from the front in 1141, imprisoned and executed in early 1142 after proceedings associated above all with the chief councillor Qin Hui. Later Song governments rehabilitated him, and subsequent tradition made Yue Fei a model of loyalty, patriotic resistance and military virtue. That posthumous cult is historically important in its own right, although later legends and sayings attributed to him should not all be treated as contemporary evidence.

In Jin Yong’s A Snake Lies Waiting, writings attributed to Yue Fei become a strategic prize sought by the Jin prince Wanyan Honglie, who hopes they will reveal a method for defeating the Southern Song. The novel draws on Yue Fei’s later reputation as the exemplary anti-Jin commander rather than simply reproducing his documented biography, turning the memory of the executed general into a source of political and military authority generations after his death.
