Virginia Woolf
1882–1941
Virginia Woolf was a central figure in literary modernism and the Bloomsbury Group. With her husband Leonard Woolf she founded the Hogarth Press, which published modernist writing and allowed her unusual control over her own work. Novels including Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse and The Waves experimented with consciousness, memory and the passage of time.
Her essays, especially A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas, examined the economic and institutional barriers facing women. Woolf’s relationship with Vita Sackville-West inspired Orlando and generated a major body of correspondence. Periods of severe mental illness accompanied her creative life, and she died by suicide in 1941. Her work remains foundational to modernist, feminist and queer literary history.
