Ulrich von Jungingen was grand master of the Teutonic Order from 1407 to 1410. He led the order’s army against the Polish–Lithuanian alliance and was killed at the Battle of Grunwald, a defeat that severely damaged Teutonic military prestige.
Ulrich von Jungingen also held the offices or ranks of Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights and superior general. Ulrich von Jungingen was born in Hohenfels and died in Stębark.
In Henryk Sienkiewicz’s The Knights of the Cross, Volume IV, at the Battle of Grunwald in July 1410, the Polish–Lithuanian army defeats the Order and Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen is killed. Sienkiewicz combines the battle’s historical commanders with the fictional fulfilment of Zbyszko’s vows and his eventual acceptance of a future with Jagienka. Ulrich von Jungingen is treated fictionally in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s The Knights of the Cross, Volume II and Henryk Sienkiewicz’s The Knights of the Cross, Volume III.
