Thomas Paine was an English-born political writer whose pamphlets became influential arguments for American independence and republican government. Common Sense and The American Crisis supported the revolutionary cause, while Rights of Man and The Age of Reason placed him within the political and religious controversies of revolutionary France and the Atlantic world.
