Thomas Joseph Kendrick
1881–1972
Thomas Joseph Kendrick was a British intelligence officer whose career stretched from the early twentieth century into the Second World War. As SIS station chief in Vienna, operating under diplomatic cover, he ran intelligence networks and became involved in efforts that helped thousands of Austrian Jews leave after the Anschluss. He was arrested and interrogated by the Gestapo in 1938 before being expelled from Austria.
During the Second World War Kendrick organised clandestine listening operations in which German prisoners were secretly recorded at sites including the Tower of London, Trent Park, Latimer House and Wilton Park. Helen Fry’s Spymaster is his biography, while The Walls Have Ears examines the listening system he helped build. The books are nonfiction and the record reflects documented historical roles rather than fictional portrayal.
