Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was raised in a Quaker family and worked as a teacher before becoming active in temperance, abolition and women’s rights. Her partnership with Elizabeth Cady Stanton combined Anthony’s organising and lecture work with Stanton’s writing, creating campaigns for property rights, equal pay and the vote.

Anthony was arrested after voting in the 1872 presidential election and later led the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She travelled widely and continued lobbying until her death in 1906, fourteen years before ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment.
