Stanisław August Poniatowski
1732–1798
Stanisław August Poniatowski was elected king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania in 1764. His reign combined cultural patronage and reform with mounting pressure from Russia, Prussia and Austria. He supported educational and constitutional change and was closely associated with the Constitution of 3 May 1791, but the Commonwealth’s neighbours intervened repeatedly in its politics.
The partitions of 1772, 1793 and 1795 ultimately destroyed the state and forced Stanisław August to abdicate.
