Sophia Alekseyevna of Russia

Sophia Alekseyevna was regent of Russia from 1682 to 1689 during the minority of Ivan V and Peter I. Her government faced court and military struggles while Russian expansion continued in Siberia.

The Streltsy crisis of 1682 helped create the joint reign of Ivan V and Peter I and gave Sophia the opportunity to govern as regent. Working with Prince Vasily Golitsyn, her administration concluded the Eternal Peace with Poland in 1686 and the Treaty of Nerchinsk with Qing China in 1689, although unsuccessful Crimean campaigns weakened her position. Peter’s supporters removed her from power later that year and confined her to the Novodevichy Convent.
