Sacagawea

Sacagawea was a Lemhi Shoshone woman who travelled with the Lewis and Clark Expedition as an interpreter and intermediary. Her linguistic knowledge, family connections and presence with an infant helped the party negotiate travel and exchange, although later national memory often reduced her role to a simplified symbol.
