Rudyard Kipling
1865–1936
Joseph Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay in 1865 and spent his earliest years in India before being sent to England for schooling. He returned in 1882 to work as a journalist in Lahore and later Allahabad, producing stories and poems rooted in the languages, institutions and social worlds of British India.
After leaving India in 1889, Kipling became one of the most widely read English-language writers of his generation. His work ranges from The Jungle Book and Kim to poetry and stories closely associated with empire. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907.
