Richard Maurice Tinkler
1898–1939
Richard Maurice Tinkler was a British First World War veteran and Shanghai Municipal Police officer whose life became the subject of Robert Bickers’s Empire Made Me.
After enlisting under age in 1915, Tinkler served in the British Army and joined the Shanghai Municipal Police in 1919. His surviving letters document policing, class resentment, racial attitudes and expatriate life in the International Settlement. After leaving the force he worked in a Shanghai textile mill and died in June 1939 after being wounded by Japanese marines.
