Richard Hillary
1919–1943
Richard Hillary joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve while at Oxford and flew Spitfires with No. 603 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. Shot down in September 1940, he suffered severe burns to his face and hands and underwent pioneering reconstructive surgery under Archibald McIndoe.
During his recovery Hillary wrote The Last Enemy, one of the best-known personal accounts of wartime flying. Determined to return to operational service despite his injuries, he retrained on night fighters and was killed in a training crash in Scotland in January 1943.
