Richard Henry Stevens

Richard Henry Stevens was a British Army officer who worked for the Secret Intelligence Service and served in the Netherlands under diplomatic cover. During the opening months of the Second World War he was involved in contacts with men claiming to represent German military opponents of Hitler.

On 9 November 1939 Stevens and Sigismund Payne Best travelled to a meeting near Venlo. The supposed opposition contacts were controlled by the German Sicherheitsdienst, and a German team crossed the border, seized the British officers and carried them into Germany. Stevens remained a prisoner until the final stages of the war and survived captivity.
