Ramón Mercader

Ramón Mercader was a Spanish Communist and Soviet agent who assassinated Leon Trotsky in Mexico City in 1940. Using a false identity, he entered Trotsky’s circle through a relationship with one of the household’s associates.

Mercader killed Trotsky with an ice axe and served twenty years in a Mexican prison. The Soviet Union secretly honoured him after his release, confirming the political purpose of the murder.
