Perseus of Macedon

Perseus of Macedon was the last king of the Antigonid dynasty in Macedon. His attempt to preserve Macedonian influence led to the Third Macedonian War, ending in defeat by Aemilius Paullus at Pydna and captivity in Rome.

Perseus attempted to rebuild Macedonian influence in Greece while avoiding an immediate rupture with Rome, but the relationship deteriorated into the Third Macedonian War. Roman victory at Pydna in 168 BCE destroyed his army and ended the Antigonid monarchy. Perseus surrendered to Lucius Aemilius Paullus, was displayed in the Roman triumph and spent the rest of his life in captivity in Italy.
