Mohammad Hatta
1902–1980
Mohammad Hatta was an Indonesian nationalist politician and economist who became a leading advocate of independence from Dutch colonial rule. He worked closely with Sukarno despite important political differences and, after Japan’s surrender, joined him in proclaiming Indonesian independence on 17 August 1945.
Hatta became vice president of the Republic of Indonesia and played a major role in diplomacy during the Indonesian National Revolution. Negotiations with the Netherlands and international pressure eventually produced the transfer of sovereignty in 1949. Phil Craig’s 1945: The Reckoning places the beginning of the Indonesian struggle within the wider collapse of European imperial authority in Asia.
