Historical person

Michal

Michal was a daughter of Saul and wife of David. She helps David escape from Saul but later becomes estranged from him, placing her between two rival royal houses during the creation of the Davidic monarchy.

Michal’s marriage to David begins as a political and personal connection between David and Saul’s household, but later narratives emphasise estrangement. After David becomes king, he demands her return from another husband, and 2 Samuel later depicts her criticising David’s public dancing before the Ark. Her story exposes the costs of dynastic conflict for women whose marriages were used to secure or symbolise political claims.

Geraldine BrooksThe Secret Chord retells Michal’s marriage to David as part of the unstable household behind his rise to kingship. Her early loyalty to David, separation from him and later estrangement allow the novel to examine the personal cost of David’s ambition and sexual politics, while Michal’s position as Saul’s daughter keeps the rivalry between the old and new royal houses alive inside the family itself.
