Maria Anna Mozart

1751–1829

Maria Anna Walburga Ignatia Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1751 and received keyboard instruction from her father, Leopold. As a child she performed at courts and public venues across Europe with her younger brother Wolfgang, and contemporary reports praised her skill.

Her touring career effectively ended as she approached marriageable age, although she continued to teach and perform privately. She married Johann Baptist Franz von Berchtold zu Sonnenburg, raised children, and later returned to Salzburg. No securely attributed compositions survive, despite references suggesting that she wrote music.
