Leopoldo Galtieri
1926–2003
Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri was an Argentine army general who became de facto president during the military dictatorship. In April 1982 his government ordered the seizure of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, triggering the war with Britain that ended with Argentine surrender in June.
Defeat destroyed Galtieri’s political position and accelerated the collapse of military rule in Argentina. Max Hastings and Simon Jenkins’s The Battle for the Falklands examines the political calculations of the Argentine junta as well as the British military campaign. The work is nonfiction.
