Johann Georg Leopold Mozart was born in Augsburg in 1719 and entered the service of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg as a violinist. His influential violin treatise appeared in 1756, and he became vice-Kapellmeister while also composing and teaching.
After recognising the abilities of Maria Anna and Wolfgang, Leopold organised extensive European tours and managed their education, publicity and finances. His guidance was essential to Wolfgang’s development, but his control over both children and his decision to end Nannerl’s touring career have made him a complex figure in biography and fiction.
